Bumper's glaucoma problem

Bumper, a friendly 28-year-old male
People often ask me about my success stories in veterinary medicine. This story is pretty cool. The horse in these pics is mamed Bumper. He is a 28 year old Appaloosa gelding with a variety of medical issues. However, the one problem that is most important is his glaucoma.
With horses, glaucoma is usually secondary to some other disease such as uveitis or a prior traumatic event. In Bumpers’ case, the glaucoma was due to chronic uveitis. Periodically, Bumper has painful flare-ups that make him miserable. He walks around the pasture with a swollen, painful, and bulging eye. In the past, we have used conventional medicine as well as acupuncture to control his pain.
Lately, the only thing that seems to work is the acupuncture. Over the past five years, I have been working on his eye intermittently and have consistently been able to relieve his pain.
If a horse with glaucoma does not improve, many times they have to be euthanized due to chronic pain and eventual blindness. So we are all happy that Bumper has reacted well to acupuncture and the overall treatment.
