Got a call about 10:00 pm last night from a very concerned new puppy owner. She claimed that her new puppy ate a few pieces of gum and  was concerned thinking that the gum may cause diarrhea. She said the puppy was acting a little tired and lethargic. I told her not to be concerned with the diarrhea but more importantly a sugar substitute in the gum called Xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar sustitute in many gums, candies, and cookies that when ingested by pets may cause severe toxic insults. Toxic signs include tremors, lethargy, and stumbling. Signs may progress and occasionally result in fatalities. The article below was published in USA Today about Xylitol in dogs!!
